How to apply our paints and coatings
Brantho-Korrux coatings are renowned for their exceptional versatility and user-friendly application. These direct to metal paints stand out for their safety as they contain no hazardous or toxic ingredients. 3 in 1 is suitable for DIY projects, even without experience or specialised equipment. It’s possible to achieve a professional finish and unbeatable rust protection.
If you have selected our 3 in 1 product there is no need for additional primers or undercoats. Choose your preferred method of application:
- Brush or paint roller
- Aerosol, airless-spray or air-pressure spray
- Dipping or flooding
Prepare the surface for painting
When it comes to painting metal, wood or other materials, the key is to ensure that the surface is thoroughly clean, dry, and free from grease or contaminants. In the case of painting surfaces containing iron, manually remove loose rust or corrosion to start with a clean base. Water based coatings such as Ecopakt are particularly sensitive to any greasy residue.
For rusty steel or cast iron use a wire brush or 240 grit sand paper, but we recommend Scotchbrite® on new galvanised steel or light metals such as aluminium.
Paint selection
All of our products, with the exception of Kristall-Glasur, can be directly applied. If you are using a spray gun, a small amount of Kombi-Thinner should be added in line with the information on the data sheet.
Most of our Brantho-Korrux range of paints and coatings are remarkably adaptable. They can be applied in temperatures as low as -10°C and still ensure consistent results.
How many coats are required
Coatings that are supplied in tins will need to be stirred well before application. Aerosols must be shaken vigorously.
One thorough coat of 3 in 1 offers good corrosion resistance.
Two to three thick coats shows a lifetime expectancy of up to 15 years even when exposed to corrosive weather conditions.
In between coats, allow the newly painted surface to be touch dry before reapplying the next coat. There is no need to sand 3 in 1 in between coats. Service life increases with the thickness of the coating.
Drying time of our paints and coatings
3 in 1 is touch dry in just 20–30 minutes and fully dried in approximately 8–10 hours. Fully cured in around 3-4 days and fully durable in 7–10 days.
Nitrofest is touch dry after just 10 minutes and completely dried after 72 hours.
For new galvanised material consider Brantho-Korrux Adhesion Primer for a faster drying time.
Baking or forced curing is not suitable. Drying times depend on film thickness, ventilation, temperature, relative humidity. Look for the technical sheets for each product for detailed information.
Cleaning and recommended equipment
A short nap synthetic roller is recommended, up to 12mm nap is suitable for 2-component coatings such as 2-Kompo. Please do not use foam rollers. Use synthetic brushes only.
Clean equipment directly after use with water. Rinsing water (spray equipment cleaning) can be used for dilution later. If dried up use Brantho-Korrux Spezial-Thinner.
Disposal
Empty cans are recyclable (see local directions). Non-empty cans are contaminated waste.
Empty cans can be recycled as high quality scrap or disposed of with household waste.
Health and safety first
Brantho-Korrux 3 in 1 is solvent-free of aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g. free of xylene or toluene). It is also lead, chromate and zinc free. However, it is good practice to take protective measures against unexpected splashes and accidental inhalation. Eye protection
It is advised to wear protective glasses against debris when preparing surfaces or splashes when painting or cleaning your equipment.
Skin protection
During normal application with a brush or roller, extra skin protection is not required as the solvent vapours are not absorbed by the skin. If, the risk of contact cannot be avoided, electrostatic conducting protective cotton clothing should be worn.
Hand protection
Nitrile-rubber gloves are recommended, these offer a penetration time of <480 minutes. At longer uninterrupted exposure to liquid paint or thinner a corresponding higher material strength or gloves with a barrier layer should be used.
Respiratory protection
Always work in a well ventilated area when applying any paints or coatings. A mask is essential when using aerosols or spraying equipment.
